I am a big fan of things with names I can pronounce. Take a look at the back of your Dish-washer detergent right now. How many of those names can you recognize, let alone say first try? Sara from Bitz and Giggles has shared her DIY, make your own dishwasher detergent mix using simple, household ingredients and it gets the job done.
I love the idea of using simple compounds found in nature to get things clean. I've made my own laundry detergent and bar soap in the past and, as someone with sensitive skin, it has really thanked me for it. The same basic concept applies to our dish-washing detergent. You have to assume that your dishwasher, not matter how much you paid for it, isn't going to be able to get every single, little microscopic particle of detergent off of your plates, cutlery and drinking glasses. That you are ultimately going to be ingesting some of that soapy, chemical residue next time you serve your family dinner or need a glass of water.
The health reasons, for me, are reason enough, but the price of dish-washing soap and detergent packages are also outrageous. Why are we paying hundreds of dollars a year for this chemical concoction that we could really just be making ourselves with some straightforward, easy to pronounce, trustworthy items. Natural alternatives always make me feel like I have unlocked some secret that I was meant to find. That nature put cleaning agents in its bounty and would really, at the end of the day, prefer I use them, over something from a bottle.
